Lava International entered Kenya's smartphone market in 2019 with the Lava Z81, targeting the lower mid-range segment amid a period of declining global sales and OEM exits. The device competes with brands like Infinix, TECNO, OPPO, Huawei, and Samsung, offering 2GB/16GB and 3GB/32GB configurations at Ksh 12,000 and Ksh 14,000 respectively.
The Z81 features a 5.7-inch 720p IPS display with 18:9 aspect ratio protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It includes a headphone jack, micro USB port, dual nano SIM slots, and expandable memory. The rear design houses a 13MP main camera with LED flash, fingerprint scanner, and facial unlock support alongside a 13MP front camera.
Powered by a MediaTek Helio A22 chipset with 2GB or 3GB RAM, the device runs Android 8.1 Oreo. While the minimalistic interface requires third-party launchers for customization, performance handles multimedia tasks but struggles with heavy multitasking on the 2GB variant. The 3000mAh battery supports average daily use with standard charging.
Despite its features, the Z81 faces challenges as mid-range technologies have become accessible at lower price points. The phone was launched in February 2019 but arrives in a market where budget devices now offer comparable specifications at more competitive prices.
