Kirinyaga County Governor Ann Waiguru emphasized the county's alignment with Kenya's Big Four agenda during the 2019 annual devolution conference, highlighting priorities in manufacturing, healthcare, affordable housing, and food security. She noted the county's transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture, citing its status as a leading producer of coffee, tomatoes, and rice.
"We produce 54,000 tonnes of tomatoes annually," Waiguru stated, describing the shift toward industrial agriculture. The county's Wezesha Kirinyaga program, supported by the World Bank, aims to boost youth and women's participation in agri-business through initiatives like macadamia and avocado seedling production.
Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu criticized delays in implementing the Big Four agenda, blaming inadequate funding for challenges in affordable housing and food security. While acknowledging progress in healthcare under the Universal Health Coverage program, he called for clearer delineation of county roles in national development efforts.
The governors' remarks came during discussions on coordinating county and national government strategies to advance the Big Four objectives.
