Rongai Sub County has launched a three-week vaccination campaign targeting 57,000 goats and sheep to prevent outbreaks of goat and sheep pox ahead of the Easter holiday auction. The viral disease, characterized by skin lesions and fever, poses significant risks to livestock health, according to Chief Officer for Livestock Enos Amuyunzu.
Veterinary teams have begun administering vaccines, with additional measures including deworming and supplementary feeding for animals. Amuyunzu noted that many farmers in the sub county have historically neglected these health protocols, but the initiative aims to improve animal condition for higher market value. "Farmers will be able to sell their stock at improved prices by Easter," he said.
Extension officers are also conducting training sessions on disease prevention and optimal feeding practices. Amuyunzu emphasized that proper nutrition is critical for livestock health, stating, "Livestock health can only improve if farmers use the right animal feed." The auction is scheduled for Banita market, where vaccinated animals are expected to fetch better returns.
