The fifth Beyond Zero Marathon, initiated by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta in 2014, will take place in 2019 with over 20,000 expected participants. The event includes multiple races, with the Paralympic category serving as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Event Schedule and Route ¶
The marathon features four races starting at different times on Sunday. The Paralympic race begins at 6:30 am, followed by the 21km half-marathon at 7 am, 10km road race and corporate run at 8:30 am, and a 3km family fun race. All events will start at Nyayo Stadium on Uhuru Highway, with participants traveling through Nairobi's central business district before returning.
Restricted Routes ¶
Several key roads will be closed during the event, including Mombasa Road, Lusaka Road, Aerodrome Road, Bunyala Road, Haile Selassie Roundabout, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, Waiyaki Way, and Museum Hill. These closures will affect morning traffic only.
Paralympic Inclusion and Safety Measures ¶
The Paralympic race will accommodate athletes with intellectual and visual impairments. Athletics Kenya confirmed the event's role in Paralympic qualification. Organizers reported 2,000 staff members, including security and volunteers, to ensure participant safety.
Prize Distribution ¶
The 21km race will award Ksh 250,000 to the winner, with Ksh 125,000 and Ksh 75,000 for second and third places respectively.
