Nancy Agutu, a reporter for The Star, has been recognized with a top health journalism award for her online reporting on maternal health challenges in Kenya.
The Africa Media Network on Health Journalism Awards celebrated journalists who produced exceptional health-related content across TV, radio, print, and digital platforms. A total of 161 entries were submitted, with 44 in TV, 29 in radio, 50 in print, and 38 in online categories.
Agutu's award-winning piece focused on stillbirth prevention, featuring the stories of two Kenyan women who lost their pregnancies. The article, published in 2018, explored the emotional and societal impacts of unexplained fetal losses, which many mothers attribute to personal failings or cultural stigma.
"This recognition underscores the power of digital storytelling in amplifying critical health issues," Agutu said. "It also highlights the need for better medical communication to support grieving families." Her work was praised by The Star's Digital Editor Oliver Mathenge, who emphasized the publication's commitment to quality journalism that resonates with audiences.
The awards program, organized by the Africa Media Network on Health Journalism, involves journalists from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Malawi. It is supported by the Health Systems Advocacy Partnership, a consortium including Amref Health Africa and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation.
According to a 2018 UNICEF report, over 80% of newborn deaths in Kenya stem from preterm birth, labor complications, and infections. Dr. Grace Wanjiku, a gynaecologist at Kenyatta National Hospital, attributed many stillbirths to genetic abnormalities, describing them as "inherent mistakes" in reproductive cells that can lead to spontaneous abortions.
