Rwanda's President Paul Kagame arrived in Tanzania on Thursday for a two-day state visit, marking a key diplomatic engagement with President John Magufuli as both leaders work to reinforce regional partnerships within the East African Community (EAC).
The visit includes bilateral discussions on EAC priorities, with Kagame currently serving as the bloc's chair. The talks will address regional integration efforts, infrastructure projects, and cross-border collaboration, according to a statement from Tanzania's Foreign Affairs and EAC ministry.
Kagame and Magufuli have maintained a cooperative relationship, contrasting with the earlier tensions between Kagame and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. Magufuli's 2016 trip to Rwanda, his first foreign visit after assuming office, underscored the evolving dynamics between the two nations.
The leaders previously met in January 2018, where they signed an agreement to advance the standard gauge railway (SGR) connecting Isaka to Kigali. This infrastructure project remains a focal point of bilateral cooperation.
While the discussions will remain confidential, a joint press conference is scheduled following the closed-door meetings. The visit occurs against a backdrop of strained relations between Rwanda and Uganda, as well as complex ties with Burundi, both EAC members.
