Microsoft has established its first data centers on the African continent, launching Azure cloud services from new regions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. This marks the first time a global cloud provider has offered infrastructure from within Africa.
Yousef Khalidi, corporate vice president of Azure Networking, emphasized the strategic significance of the move: "The combination of Microsoft's global cloud infrastructure with the new African regions will create economic opportunities, accelerate investment, and improve access to cloud and internet services for organizations across the continent."
A 2018 report on cloud adoption in Africa revealed that medium and large organizations increased cloud usage by over 100% between 2013 and 2018. In South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, 90% of surveyed companies plan to boost cloud spending in the coming year, despite ongoing concerns about cybersecurity threats among African CEOs.
Microsoft's expansion includes its 4Afrika Initiative, launched in 2013, which focuses on internet access, digital skills, and local technology development. Recent partnerships, such as with FirstBank Nigeria, aim to extend cloud services and educational platforms to small and medium enterprises.
In Kenya, the FarmBeats program leverages IoT technology to enhance agricultural productivity by combining traditional farming knowledge with data analytics. The initiative seeks to increase crop yields through precision farming techniques.
Microsoft has also developed over 800 Microsoft Imagine Academies across Africa to train students in technology. In collaboration with the African Development Bank, the "Coding for Employment" program aims to create 25 million jobs and reach 50 million youth and women by 2025.
Ibrahim Youssry, general manager for Microsoft's Africa operations, stated: "By connecting more businesses to Azure, we're fostering innovation and enabling startups to expand into new markets. This infrastructure will link African enterprises with global opportunities."
Azure's African deployment precedes the 2019 availability of Office 365 and Dynamics 365, Microsoft's cloud-based productivity and business applications, in the region.
