Kenyan comedian Henry Desagu, whose real name is Ithagu Kibicho, has shared insights into his career trajectory and family dynamics that shaped his path in entertainment.
Desagu revealed that his parents initially opposed his comedic aspirations, preferring a traditional career. 'My late father wanted me in a white-collar job,' he stated, explaining their resistance to his early church performances. The family's skepticism persisted as he pursued comedy, with Desagu recalling being 'chased' during auditions due to his physique and pressured to impersonate others.
His breakthrough came during his Kenyatta University studies, where he founded a comedy group that launched his career. After struggling in theater, he shifted to vlogging, creating content that resonated with audiences. One of his notable works, the 'Team Mafisi' skit, addressed societal issues, particularly targeting predatory behavior by older men. 'The concept emerged from the need to protect young people,' Desagu explained, highlighting the real-world inspiration behind his humor.
Despite his popularity, Desagu acknowledged financial challenges, noting that public perception often leads to expectations of wealth. 'Everyone assumes you have money,' he said, reflecting on the pressures of fame. He also addressed criticism, stating that detractors are 'also fans' in his view.
