The National Assembly faced intense division on Wednesday as a strike by airport workers paralyzed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), leading to flight cancellations and economic losses. The Kenya Airport Workers Union (Kawu) initiated the action to protest Kenya Airways' (KQ) proposed takeover of the airport, fearing job losses.
Mumias East MP Bernard Washiali led an adjournment motion calling for the dismissal of Kawu members, citing the strike's economic impact. He claimed over Sh500 million was lost on Wednesday alone due to canceled flights and hotel bookings. However, other lawmakers criticized KAA and KQ management for failing to prevent the crisis.
Majority Leader Aden Duale and others demanded the sacking of striking employees, labeling the action a threat to national security. "Aeroplanes could not land or take off. KAA must sack all participants," Duale stated. Minority Whip Junet Mohamed urged the management to address employee concerns rather than resort to dismissals.
Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba attributed the strike to KAA and KQ's mismanagement, noting the absence of a comprehensive bargaining agreement since 2016. Suba South MP John Mbadi criticized the lack of a cabinet-approved plan for the airport takeover, calling the strike "irresponsible."
