Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) questioned Finance Minister Henry Rotich for 13 hours over allegations of financial misconduct linked to two airport construction projects. The inquiry followed revelations that 21 billion shillings allocated for the projects had been unaccounted for, according to audit findings.
A senior police official stated, "We are seeking clarity on how his office managed public funds, given the irregularities in the construction contracts." The statement came after Rotich arrived at DCI headquarters in Kiambu at 3 p.m. on Monday, though his deputy, Katwa Kigen, arrived on time.
Investigators reportedly obtained documents detailing the disbursement of funds, with one auditor noting, "Despite the contractor receiving payments, the projects remain incomplete, raising concerns about financial mismanagement." The DCI has since requested further information from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Rotich denied wrongdoing, asserting that all payments for the airport developments were made in compliance with legal procedures. The case remains under investigation, with additional officials expected to be questioned.
