Henry Desagu, known for his viral comedy skits, has become a prominent figure in Kenya's entertainment scene under his stage name. His real name is Ithagu Kibicho, and he credits his early church performances with shaping his comedic style.
"My late father wanted me to pursue a white-collar job, but I chose comedy," Desagu recalled, explaining his parents' initial resistance to his career path. "They were upset when I focused on comedy, but they eventually appreciated my success."
Desagu's breakthrough came during his studies at Kenyatta University, where he founded a comedy theatre group. Despite facing challenges like body-shaming during auditions and rejection for impersonation attempts, he persisted. "I failed many auditions, but I kept going," he said.
"The Team Mafisi concept emerged from observing societal issues. I wanted to create a movement against exploitation of young people," he explained, referencing one of his most popular sketches.
While his career has brought recognition, Desagu acknowledges financial struggles. "People expect me to support them financially just because I'm successful," he noted. Despite criticism, he views detractors as part of his fanbase.
