Over 20,000 runners are expected to participate in the 2019 Beyond Zero Marathon scheduled for March 10 in Nairobi, Kenya. The event, organized by Athletics Kenya (AK) and IMG Kenya, will include a Paralympic race serving as a pre-qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Event organizers announced expanded categories to accommodate athletes with intellectual and visual impairments, alongside traditional race divisions. The marathon will feature a 21km half marathon, 10km road race, wheelchair and tricycle categories, and a 5km family fun run. A 2km pregnant walk will raise maternal health awareness, aligning with the event's theme.
Start times will vary by category, with the Paralympic race beginning at 6:30am and the 21km half marathon at 7:00am. The 10km and corporate run will start at 8:30am, followed by the 5km family fun run at 9:00am. All races will begin outside Nyayo Stadium on Uhuru Highway, with participants traversing Nairobi's central business district before returning to the starting point.
Prize money for elite competitors includes Ksh. 250,000 for the 21km winner and Ksh. 100,000 for the 10km champion. Over 2,000 staff and 300 volunteers will manage the event, with road closures affecting key routes including Uhuru Highway, Kenyatta Avenue, and University Way.
