The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is set to kick off on August 30th, 2019, with all teams gearing up for the new season. The league has been criticized in the past for lacking competition, with Gor Mahia dominating the top tier for the past three seasons.
As the 18-time KPL champions, Gor Mahia has won the league with significant margins in the past three seasons. In fact, they have been crowned champions before completing their matches in each of those seasons.
AFC Leopards, often seen as Gor Mahia's main competitor, has struggled to match the dominant team's level. Despite their rich history and large following, AFC Leopards has failed to challenge Gor Mahia in recent years, with the latter dominating in all aspects.
However, other teams are starting to show promise. Slum teams like Mathare United and Kariobangi Sharks are improving their football quality, and the slum derby between the two teams is becoming increasingly competitive. Bandari FC, which finished second behind Gor Mahia last season, is also a title contender this year.
Wazito FC, a newly promoted side, is also looking to make a mark in the KPL. Having won the National Super League (NSL) last season, Wazito is setting its sights on winning the KPL. The team has already signed seven players and is looking to bolster its squad to match the KPL's level.
