In January 2019, Facebook announced a strategic initiative to merge its messaging platforms—WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger—into an integrated system. The goal was to enhance user experience by combining acquired services like WhatsApp with native apps such as Messenger.

Zuckerberg detailed the vision in a public statement, describing it as a "Privacy Focused Vision For Social Networking." He emphasized a shift toward private communication, stating, "As I think about the future of the internet, I believe a privacy-focused communications platform will become even more important than today’s open platform." This approach drew direct influence from WhatsApp, which he called "the muse" for the transformation.

The plan involves extending WhatsApp’s privacy model to include voice calls, video chats, group features, business tools, and payment systems. Key elements include end-to-end encryption, secure data storage, and minimizing the permanence of user information. Zuckerberg acknowledged technical hurdles but framed the initiative as essential for evolving social networking.

The strategy aims to balance privacy with functionality, enabling free communication while maintaining user data control. Zuckerberg described this as the "future" of Facebook’s services, though implementation specifics remain under development.
