Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has criticized Kenyans for misusing loans for non-essential expenses, urging better financial discipline and a culture of saving. The remarks came during a speech to police officers at the Kenya Police Sacco Annual General Meeting in Nairobi.
Speaking at the event, Matiang’i highlighted the risks of borrowing for leisure activities, using an example of a Sh800,000 loan taken for a four-day Dubai holiday. He questioned how individuals could justify spending such sums on travel when prudent financial management could yield greater long-term benefits.
"If someone takes a loan to spend Sh400,000 on alcohol, they believe they still have Sh600,000 remaining," Matiang’i said. "But this mindset leads to financial ruin. We must educate those who start earning to prioritize savings over immediate gratification." He emphasized that financial stability directly impacts professional performance and societal responsibility.
The CS encouraged police officers to join savings cooperatives but noted legal limitations preventing mandatory participation. "While I would prefer all officers to save, the law does not grant me the authority to enforce this," he stated. He linked poor financial habits to broader societal issues, arguing that irresponsible spending undermines economic progress.
