President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi have escalated their public dispute over allegations of political interference in corruption investigations, with Sudi accusing the head of state of orchestrating cases against members of the Kalenjin community.
Sudi's Social Media Accusations ¶
In response to Uhuru's recent remarks, Sudi posted on Facebook: "Well, well, well said Mr. President, I agree with you that we must not address these issues in funerals, weddings or other public functions. But unfortunately, Uhuru is DCI and DCI is Uhuru." The MP, often aligned with Deputy President William Ruto, framed the president as directly controlling the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Open Letter Details Four Alleged Cases ¶
Sudi's allegations, detailed in an open letter to Uhuru, include:
- Ken Tarus case: Prosecution of Kenya Power executive over a transaction involving a sitting principal secretary, with claims of evidence suppression to protect the official.
- Joe Sang case: Prosecution of Kenya Pipeline employee over a Kisumu fuel jetty project, allegedly influenced by political connections of board members.
- Dam projects: Unexplained delays in construction of four dams, including Arror and Kimwarer in Elgeiyo Marakwet, with Sudi alleging targeted profiling to block development.
- Kenya Forest Service: Claims of direct interference in dam approvals, with Sudi asserting the president's involvement in obstructing projects despite initial regulatory approvals.
The letter concludes with Sudi urging Uhuru to confront political adversaries openly rather than using anti-corruption efforts as a pretext. "What you are engaged in... is called IMPUNITY," he wrote.
