Five Kenyan-born athletes have been selected to compete for the United States at the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, on March 30. The team includes Shadrack Kipchirchir, a 2016 Rio Olympic 10,000m finalist and U.S. national cross country champion, alongside Leonard Korir, who won the 2018 U.S. title. Also named are Hillary Bor, Stanley Kebenei, and Emmanuel Bor, with Mason Ferlic as the sole U.S.-born member of the senior men’s squad.
Kipchirchir, Korir, and Kebenei previously competed for the U.S. at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, where they finished fifth in the team standings. Three of the Kenyan-born athletes serve in the U.S. Army, with Emmanuel Bor and Korir holding the rank of sergeant and Hillary Bor as a staff sergeant. Kipchirchir is affiliated with Nike and trains under the American Distance Project in Colorado, while Kebenei graduated from the University of Arkansas. Ferlic specializes in steeplechase.
Barnaba Korir, chairman of Athletics Kenya’s Youth Committee, emphasized the significance of Kenyan athletes competing internationally. He noted that such participation reflects Kenya’s enduring athletic influence and urged focus on rival nations like Uganda and Ethiopia rather than questioning athletes’ citizenship choices. Korir cited examples like footballer Divock Origi and cyclist Chris Froome, advocating for collaboration with athletes and their adopted countries to benefit Kenyan athletics.
The senior women’s team includes steeplechase record-holder Courtney Frerichs, NCAA champion Karissa Schweizer, and Marielle Hall, among others. The mixed relay squad features Kirubel Erassa and Eleanor Fulton, while the Under 20 teams comprise emerging talents across both genders.
