A nationwide strike by aviation workers disrupted major airports, triggering concerns over economic and security implications. The action, led by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (Kawu), highlights tensions over a controversial plan to transfer airport management to Kenya Airways (KQ).

The proposed takeover, which the National Assembly halted due to economic viability concerns, has drawn sharp criticism from workers who argue KQ lacks the capacity to manage airports effectively. Aviation unions warn the move threatens job security and operational stability, citing KQ's financial struggles as a key obstacle.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) denied initiating the transaction, stating it received directives from the Cabinet without formal documentation. This lack of transparency has fueled skepticism about the decision-making process, with critics emphasizing the need for stakeholder consultation in such critical matters.

KAA has consistently maintained profitability and expanded Jomo Kenyatta International Airport into a regional hub. In contrast, KQ's financial instability raises questions about its ability to handle airport operations. While airport management partnerships exist globally, experts argue KQ's current state makes it ill-suited for the role.

Aviation workers are urged to seek resolutions through dialogue rather than industrial action to maintain operational stability. The standoff underscores broader challenges in balancing labor rights, economic development, and institutional accountability in Kenya's aviation sector.
