Four Somali women, including a 28-year-old aunt who lived with the victim, are facing murder charges in the death of a 14-year-old Kenyan girl in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate.
Investigations revealed the suspects had falsely claimed the girl was an orphan, despite her mother being alive but suffering from mental illness. Police traced family members after preliminary findings indicated the girl's mother was not deceased.
Autopsy results from Tuesday showed the girl sustained fatal injuries from a blunt object, with wounds across her head and body. The mother and grandmother arrived in Nairobi on Tuesday following the girl's burial the previous day according to Muslim traditions, while the father is expected from Ethiopia.
The suspects attempted to conduct a burial at South C mosque on Sunday morning but were intercepted by police. The body was taken to City Mortuary for postmortem examination, leading to the aunt's arrest the same day based on missing-person reports.
Police confirmed they received public tips about the girl's mysterious death and have charged the suspects. Neighbors and officers reported the decomposing body had been cleaned for burial, with bloodstains noted on her clothing by human rights activist Florence Kanyua.
The aunt was arrested and arraigned on Monday, with prosecutors seeking 14 days of detention at Pangani police station. Other suspects were arrested on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday, where the judge authorized 11 days of police custody.
