Four Somali women have been charged in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old Kenyan girl in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate, according to police investigations.
The accused include the victim's 28-year-old aunt, Nathifa Mohamed, who lived with the girl. Authorities revealed the suspects falsely claimed the minor was an orphan during initial interrogations.
Investigations later uncovered that the girl's mother was alive but suffering from mental illness, prompting detectives to trace other family members. The mother and grandmother arrived in Nairobi on Tuesday following the girl's burial, while the father is expected from Ethiopia.
Autopsy results from Tuesday indicated the girl died from blunt-force trauma, with injuries to the head and body. Police intercepted suspects attempting to bury the body at South C mosque on Sunday morning, taking the remains to City Mortuary for further examination.
The aunt was arrested the same day and arraigned on Monday. Prosecutors sought 14 days of detention, while the court authorized 11 days for all suspects. Additional suspects were arrested on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday.
Witnesses reported bloodstains on the victim's clothing, while police confirmed the body had been cleaned prior to the burial attempt. A Directorate of Criminal Investigation officer stated the case was initiated after public reports of the girl's mysterious death.
