Takaful Insurance distributed Sh87 million in 2019 to assist 6,000 households across eight Kenyan counties facing drought impacts from failed short rains in October 2018, according to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri. The funds aim to address livestock losses through feed purchases, water access, and veterinary services.
The initiative, part of the Kenya Livestock Insurance Programme, covers Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir, Isiolo, Mandera, Tana-River, Garissa, and Samburu counties. Kiunjuri emphasized the payout's role in preventing livestock starvation by enabling herd relocation to areas with better forage.
Takaful CEO David Wanyama noted the scheme's long-term benefits for pastoralists, with plans to expand coverage. Meanwhile, the National Drought Management Authority reported worsening conditions in 10 counties, urging accelerated relief efforts.
