Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has pledged to hold accountable officials found misusing Sacco funds, emphasizing strict measures against financial misconduct.
Speaking during the annual meeting of Police Sacco delegates in Nairobi, Matiang’i highlighted the need for disciplined officers to engage with cooperative structures for mutual benefit.
"One way in which we are going to support co-operative movements is to punish and bring to book those who misuse the Sacco resources. We will go after these people. We are hot on the trail of the Ekeza officials and others," he stated.
Matiang’i also outlined plans to allocate 20% of all housing projects under the Ministry of Housing to the police department, aiming to enhance their welfare.
He urged Police Sacco to establish training initiatives to educate members on prudent financial management and savings strategies.
The remarks follow reports of the Ekeza Savings and Credit Cooperative Society nearing collapse due to management failures, with members demanding the return of their funds. A prior incident in January 2019 saw a pastor flee as Sacco members sought their money.
