Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria abandoned plans to attend a health conference in Rwanda on March 6, 2019, after being stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for hours due to a staff strike. The walkout, which affected multiple senior officials, forced Kuria to cancel his trip amid growing concerns over Kenya's aviation infrastructure.
Kuria told KTN that he waited at the airport since 3 a.m. alongside other lawmakers and government officials. "I was headed to Kigali but I have given up," he said. He criticized the prolonged disruption, noting that other parliamentarians were also unable to travel internationally due to the strike.
The strike targeted the management of JKIA, which had been transferred to Kenya Airways. Kuria accused the government of failing to address systemic issues despite prior warnings. "This is very sad and costly because we are now getting a run for our money from a small nation like Rwanda," he said, referencing Ethiopia and Rwanda's more stable airport operations.
The dispute over the airport takeover has drawn political scrutiny, with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his family linked to the controversial deal. Critics argue the move undermines public interest, while supporters claim it aims to improve efficiency. The incident has intensified debates about governance and infrastructure management in Kenya.
