Veteran Hip Hop artist Julisu Owino, known as Maji Maji, has emerged as a political force in Nairobi's Embakasi area, positioning himself as a contender for the Embakasi East constituency seat amid speculation about sitting Member of Parliament Babu Owino's future.
The musician's entry into local politics has intensified debates over leadership succession, with residents urging Owino to clarify his stance on pursuing higher office. A local resident stated, 'We want Babu to tell us his position because we know he's aiming for governor—let us give Maji Maji this seat.'
Maji Maji's political ambitions coincide with his ongoing community work through the Maji Maji Trust, which supports youth development and education. He also serves as patron of Wajiji FC, a football club that won the Babu Owino Super Cup in November 2021.
Political factions in Embakasi East have expressed mixed reactions to Maji's potential candidacy. One group noted, 'Babu Owino is positioning for governor, so Maji Maji should be the MP. It's time to promote him for 2022.' However, Maji has not yet confirmed his intentions, focusing instead on grassroots development efforts.
The 2022 election cycle has transformed Embakasi East into a focal point of Kenyan politics, with its youth demographic and community initiatives drawing national attention.
