Kenyan basketball star Mercy Wanyama has become the first player from her country to sign a professional contract in Spain, joining second-tier club Antuna Adba.
The Langata High School graduate, sister to Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama and former international Macdonald Mariga, secured a performance-based deal to play six remaining league matches this season.
"I have always wanted to play in Spain. I want to try European basketball and hope to give my best version," Wanyama stated. She cited her brother MacDonald's positive experiences in Asturias as a key motivator, expressing hopes to extend her stay beyond the initial contract.
Previously part of Kenya Basketball Federation's women's premier league with Equity Bank, Wanyama earned the opportunity through a two-month trial in November and January. The club's technical director, Amalio Alvarez, praised her athleticism, saying, "She is a very athletic player who will help us a lot."
Wanyama has already received a work permit and is poised for selection in Saturday's match against Axril, marking a milestone in Kenyan sports history.
