The Kenya National Women’s Volleyball Team has secured a spot in the upcoming FIVB World Cup, scheduled for September 14–29, after finishing second in Africa according to the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB).
The team, currently ranked 20th globally, will compete against world powerhouses including Japan, Cameroon, Serbia, China, and the United States. Cameroon, ranked 17th worldwide, holds the top position in Africa.
This tournament does not serve as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, unlike the 2015 edition where the top two teams earned automatic berths to the Rio 2016 Games. In 2015, the Malkia Strikers placed 10th among 12 teams, defeating Algeria and Peru in African matches.
Individual performances from the 2015 event earned recognition, with team captain Mercy Moim ranking sixth among top scorers and middle blocker Brackcides Agala placing fifth in the best receiver category. Ruth Jepng’etich was ninth in blocking.
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) chairman Waithaka Kioni expressed satisfaction with the World Cup qualification but emphasized the federation’s packed schedule. "We have multiple events this year, including the All Africa Games, Olympic Qualifier, and Africa Cup of Nations," he stated.
Kioni also mentioned plans to integrate FIVB-appointed coach Shailene Ramdoo, who will arrive in May for a three-month stint. "We aim to benefit from his expertise while ensuring his well-being," he added.
