Residents in Mombasa are enduring unseasonal heat, with meteorologists attributing the phenomenon to the sun's position over the equator. The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) confirmed temperatures have reached 34°C to 35°C, with ocean waters warming to 28°C.
Seasonal Patterns and Weather Forecasts ¶
Experts explained that the equatorial sun causes peak heating in Mombasa during March and September. KMD Deputy Director Ayub Shaka noted the current conditions align with this pattern, predicting relief within 10 days as the rainy season approaches.
Weatherman Edward Ngure emphasized the seasonal nature of the heat, stating, "The sun is directly overhead the equator on March 20. Mombasa is achieving maximum heating, the other time we experience such [high temperatures] is September 22." He assured residents the weather would normalize by mid-March.
Tourism and Health Impacts ¶
Despite the heat, international tourists continue to flock to Mombasa's beaches, drawn by warm ocean waters. Diani Reef Hotel Managing Director Bobby Kamani reported increased visitor numbers, citing colder climates in travelers' home countries as a factor.
However, health officials warn of risks, particularly for infants. Dr. Stephen Okelo of the Kenya Society of Anaesthesiologists advised staying in shaded areas, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol. He cautioned that extreme heat can lead to heat stroke, with some cases resulting in fatalities.

KMD Lamu County Director David Mwaruma highlighted differences between Mombasa and Mikindani, noting lower temperatures in the latter due to altitude and pollution factors. Despite this, Mombasa's tourism sector remains optimistic, with officials citing favorable conditions for water activities.
