A quarantine has been imposed in Nakuru West and Rangai sub-counties following an anthrax outbreak, according to Chief Officer for Livestock Enos Amuyunzu. The disease was detected two weeks prior, with veterinary teams deployed to vaccinate livestock after laboratory confirmation of the bacterial infection caused by Bacillus anthracis. Over 50,000 cattle, sheep, goats, and donkeys are targeted for vaccination, with farmers advised to monitor animals for symptoms including high temperatures, shivering, and blood in excretions.
Amuyunzu highlighted that two weeks earlier, eight families in Barut Village contracted anthrax after consuming meat from a deceased sheep. He urged residents to avoid untested animal products and report suspicious cases. The county government confirmed vaccinations are provided free of charge, emphasizing prevention as critical to curbing transmission.
