National Assembly minority leader John Mbadi publicly challenged Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen during a Citizen TV interview over allegations of corruption in the 21 billion shilling dam projects. Mbadi accused Murkomen and Rift Valley leaders of shielding officials who misappropriated public funds, harming Kalenjin communities.
Murkomen defended his position, alleging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was politically motivated in targeting Deputy President William Ruto during the 2022 presidential campaign. He claimed investigations into the dams were being conducted improperly, citing concerns about transparency and methodology.
Mbadi emphasized the need for accountability, stating the DCI had requested Kalenjin leaders to refrain from interfering with ongoing probes. He questioned why the DCI could not complete its work without political pressure, asking, "Why can’t we give the DCI time to conduct investigations? To find out if the money was indeed used to buy tiles and towels?"
The exchange highlighted tensions over the government's $142.5 billion dam construction program, which critics contrasted with former President Mwai Kibaki's 2000s projects. A social media user noted Kibaki's five dams were built for 9.8 billion shillings without loans, contrasting with current financing methods.
Murkomen defended his role as Elgeyo Marakwet senator, stating the Arror and Kimwarer dams were located in his constituency. He denied allegations of wrongdoing, asserting the DCI's investigations lacked independence and were overly publicized through media channels.
Mbadi reiterated that Kenyans would bear the financial burden of the loans, demanding transparency from accounting officers rather than politicians. He called for the Kenya Valley Development Authority (KVDA) to clarify procurement processes and contractor qualifications.
