Mario Magonga, the pilot who died in a Sunday evening helicopter crash on Lake Turkana, was described by his family as a selfless and dedicated individual who provided for his household.
Magonga’s mother, Melania, recalled how her son was the primary financial support for the family. She shared that he had purchased a plot of land for her and was renovating a home to accommodate her move. "Mario was the pillar of this family, and his death is devastating. He would fulfill any request I made," she said, speaking to the Nation at her Kitale residence.
Upon returning from a morning walk, Melania sensed something was amiss when her daughters tried to conceal the news. A neighbor’s inquiry about a crying daughter prompted her to seek confirmation from church members, who told her her son was in intensive care. "I knew he was gone. I felt it," she said.
Magonga’s sister Gladys revealed that she learned of the tragedy through her sister-in-law around 5 a.m. She described her brother as a private and professional man who kept his work separate from family life. "He didn’t involve us in his job due to its nature," Gladys said. She expressed shock upon discovering he served as Deputy President William Ruto’s pilot.
