Singer Naiboi has highlighted persistent challenges in Kenya's music industry, citing partial progress in addressing systemic issues despite advocacy efforts. The debate over local artiste representation gained national attention following his public criticism of industry practices.
Naiboi's frustration reached a peak during the Wasafi Festival concert on December 31, 2018, where he observed preferential treatment of international acts over local performers. 'Promoters consistently prioritize global artists, creating an imbalance in recognition and opportunities,' he stated.
He asserts that without his advocacy and that of Khaligraph, the situation might not have improved. 'I've seen some shifts—television and radio stations previously resistant to Kenyan content now feature local music,' Naiboi noted. However, he emphasized the work remains unfinished.
The artist reiterated his commitment to supporting emerging talent, recalling his own struggles in the industry. 'When I started, there was little institutional support. Now, I'm determined to ensure future generations receive fair opportunities,' he said.
Sauti Sol member Bien echoed the call for policy enforcement, stating, 'If regulations mandate 80% local content, we must comply. The focus should remain on implementing existing frameworks to support Kenyan artists.'
