Kenyan singer Avril has confirmed her departure from Kaka Empire, revealing she now operates independently through her newly formed venture 'Link Sasa Universal' alongside collaborators.
I was signed in for a management contract. Yes, I am no longer with Kaka Empire. I left because I needed a different chapter. Right now I have my own thing 'Link Sasa Universal' with some friends. It's all about music distribution and songwriters.
The label has partnered with East African artists including Tanzanian acts Master Peace, Wahu, and Tommy Flavor for distribution and publishing. Avril described the transition as empowering, noting independent decision-making allows her to prioritize creative freedom.
We're slowly being fashioned into a label. The work as a signed artiste was less, but being independent, you can wake up and do what makes you happy.
Avril's latest single 'Kitoko' featuring Congolese artist L Rice marked her return to music after a maternity break. She highlighted the collaboration's challenges, including a language barrier, which was navigated with assistance from translator J Blessing.
