Kenya Airways has halted all departures from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following a strike by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, disrupting air travel for thousands of passengers.
The strike, which began on Wednesday, has led to the suspension of all KQ flights departing after 11 a.m., with the airline urging travelers to avoid the airport until further notice. While flights to Amsterdam, Mumbai, and London remained operational, other routes faced significant delays.
The dispute centers on a proposed transfer of airport management to Kenya Airways, a move opposed by workers fearing job losses. The strike has impacted critical operations including maintenance, security, air traffic control, and ground services.
Kenya Airports Authority confirmed it had suspended the strike but acknowledged ongoing challenges in restoring normal operations. Passengers at Kisumu International Airport also reported delays, with only one flight landing by Wednesday morning.
Travelers like Paul Onalo faced uncertainty after his Nairobi-bound flight was canceled. Despite having an open ticket, he expressed concern over disrupted travel plans. KAA stated it was working to resolve the crisis.
