Kenya Airways has urged passengers scheduled to depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after 11 a.m. to avoid the terminal as aviation staff strike over management disputes and proposed operational changes.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) is striking over concerns that the proposed Kenya Airways takeover of JKIA, internal management disputes, and inequitable staffing practices could lead to mass layoffs. The union argues that the planned takeover, currently under parliamentary review, would render most of them unemployed.
Flights have been grounded since 3 a.m., signaling a severe disruption in air travel. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) stated that a strike notice issued by KAWU on 27 February had been suspended following an employment court injunction granted on 5 March.
