Published on July 31, 2019, a report by the Commission for University Education (CUE) has revealed that thousands of JKUAT graduates may lose their PhD and Master's degrees due to fraudulent issuance.
The report, commissioned by Education CS George Magoha, found that JKUAT had non-adhered to guidelines on supervision load and duration of research components for PhD programs. Furthermore, there was no evidence of meetings between supervisors and supervisees, with no records of such meetings available.
As a result, the CUE has called for a review of all doctorate degrees awarded by JKUAT since 2014. The review aims to address the irregularities in the PhD programs, including the admission of students without relevant academic qualifications.
Between June 2018 and June 2019, JKUAT awarded 308 PhDs and 2,101 master's degrees during three graduation ceremonies. However, the report highlights fundamental weaknesses in the theses, with the Board of Examiners' reports identifying inconsistencies in the verdicts.
According to the report, most of the PhD graduates had published papers in journals hosted by AJPO Journals, in which several academic staff members of CoHRED had an interest. Furthermore, out of the 118 PhD graduates, 112 had been approved by Senate and their names appeared in the Graduation Booklet.
