Barnabas Kiprono, known as Lodwar, has initiated legal action to block the distribution of assets from the estate of former cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott, who died in July 2017. Kiprono claims to be owed Sh6.7 billion, including Sh382 million loaned to Biwott in November 2016, which remains unpaid. The businessman has requested the High Court to issue interim orders preventing the family from disposing of properties valued at over Sh1 billion, including commercial plots in Eldoret and Trans Nzoia.
Kiprono’s legal team argued that the Biwott family’s probate application creates a risk of asset mismanagement, citing urgency in preserving the estate. The family’s lawyers countered that Kiprono, neither a beneficiary nor dependent, lacks standing to challenge the distribution. Judge Ogla Sewe ordered the estate’s status quo to remain intact and set a April 2 deadline for further submissions.
The dispute centers on allegations of unpaid debts and competing claims over Biwott’s legacy. Kiprono’s application highlights the complexity of settling high-value estates with unresolved financial disputes.
