Kenha Director-General Peter Mundinia confirmed the second phase of Dongo Kundu Southern Bypass will begin construction in April, with the Japanese consortium Fujita Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation awarded a Sh24 billion contract for the 48-month project.
The 8.96km dual-carriageway highway includes three major bridges: the Mwache bridge (660 meters), Mwache viaduct (680 meters), and the Mteza bridge, which will span over 2 kilometers. Mundinia highlighted the Mteza bridge's scale, stating it is seven times longer than the Nyali and Kilifi bridges, aiming to improve connectivity between Dongo Kundu and the South Coast.
The project's funding comprises USD150 million (Sh15 billion), JPY 4.184 billion, and Sh4.894 billion. Mundinia explained delays in the second phase's start, attributing them to contractual reviews and government procedures, including tax assessments by the Attorney-General's office. He noted the contractor must first mobilize equipment before commencing work.
The first phase of the bypass, opened in June 2018 by President Kenyatta, was initially expected to be followed by the second phase in August 2018, but these timelines were adjusted due to administrative processes.
