Published on July 31, 2019, Nairobi News has established that Harambee Stars may not honour their crunch 2020 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Tanzania this weekend.
The East African derby, scheduled for the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, has Kenya's developmental side looking good after holding their southern neighbours to a stalemate in the first leg clash.
However, the Kenyan camp has been hit with serious cash flow challenges, with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) unable to pay player allowances.
FKF has also failed to settle payments for several service providers, including hotel accommodation, match day venue, and logistics for international referees.
According to a source close to FKF, the solution could be to forfeit the match, citing disastrous consequences, but no clear alternatives.
Under the Sports Act, the government is responsible for all expenditure for national football teams competing in international assignments. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, have assured that funds have been provided under the Sports Fund.
However, Nairobi News has been informed that up to Sh15 million is needed to adequately honour this fixture, leaving the team on the brink of disaster.
