During his address at the Sixth Annual Devolution Conference in Kirinyaga County, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed allegations against his administration, dismissing claims that the anti-graft campaign targets specific individuals. He challenged critics to present evidence of wrongdoing to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), stating, "If you have proof that I have stolen or engaged in graft, book an appointment with DCI Director George Kinoti."
The President emphasized that corruption investigations are handled by experts, asserting, "This issue of daily complaints should stop." He specifically criticized attempts to raise concerns during funerals and weddings, saying, "The deceased will not be of help to you."
Oscar Sudi, a Kapseret MP and critic of the administration, accused Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga of using anti-graft efforts to harass supporters of Deputy President William Ruto. "When Ruto backed Raila or Uhuru, he wasn't a thief, but now his turn for power comes, and suddenly he's labeled as one," Sudi alleged.
Sudi also criticized the DCI's role, claiming it is being used to target innocent citizens. However, Kenyatta defended the campaign, stating that all suspects will have legal recourse. "Why take issues to funerals? How does that help anyone?" he asked.
The President highlighted his government's anti-graft initiatives, including asset recovery programs and collaboration with the Judiciary. He called on governors to prioritize fiscal responsibility, citing examples of counties mismanaging funds. "A county receiving Sh9 billion allocates Sh6 billion to salaries for 6,000 employees, leaving only Sh3 billion for two million residents," he noted.
Kenyatta announced plans for a national conference to address budget allocation inefficiencies, stressing the need for transparency. "Failure to act would be unjust to the people," he said, urging stakeholders to focus on development over political agendas.
