Construction of the second phase of Mombasa's Sh24 billion Dongo Kundu southern bypass will commence in April 2019, according to KeNHA director-general Peter Mundinia.
The project, scheduled for completion within 48 months, will be executed by a Japanese consortium comprising Fujita Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation. Mundinia confirmed the contract award during a recent announcement.
The 8.96-kilometer dual-carriageway will feature three major bridges: a 660-meter Mwache bridge, a 680-meter Mwache viaduct, and a 2.1-kilometer Mteza bridge. The latter exceeds the length of Nyali and Kilifi bridges by seven times, according to Mundinia.
"This infrastructure will significantly reduce travel time between Mombasa and the South Coast while supporting the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone," Mundinia stated. He emphasized the project's role in enhancing regional trade and tourism.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had previously indicated the second phase would start in August 2018 during the first phase's inauguration. Mundinia clarified the delay stemmed from contractual and regulatory reviews, including tax assessments by the Attorney-General and verification of agreement terms.
