Taxi-hailing platform Uber has implemented a new safety protocol requiring vehicle owners to obtain Radio Frequency Identification stickers from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) before certification.
The mandate, effective March 1, 2019, necessitates the NTSA chip as a prerequisite for vehicle inspections at partner stations AutoXpress and Kingsway Tyres. Uber stated this measure ensures alignment between app-recorded vehicle details and NTSA databases.
Janet Kemboi, Uber East Africa spokesperson, emphasized the policy's role in prioritizing rider and driver safety: "Safety is our top priority. This requirement strengthens quality standards and enhances service safety throughout the journey."
The company already enforces existing safeguards, including valid driving licenses, log books, identity cards, and good conduct certificates for drivers.
