President Uhuru Kenyatta formally submitted Magoha's name to the legislature on Friday, marking his transition from Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) chairman to the cabinet role. This follows the departure of Amina Mohamed, who was replaced after allegations of leadership shortcomings.
Ms. Mohamed's exit saw her reassigned to the Sports Ministry, a move that came after former cabinet secretary Rashid Echesa's dismissal over management controversies. The National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, set a March 26 deadline for MPs to act on Magoha's nomination, with the Education Committee tasked to conduct hearings.
Magoha, a former University of Nairobi vice chancellor, faces scrutiny over his ability to implement educational reforms. Key priorities include overseeing the new curriculum, digital literacy initiatives, and resolving teacher salary disputes. His appointment has drawn support from figures like Chief Justice David Maraga, who argued parliamentary approval was unnecessary given his qualifications.
The Mt Kenya Teachers’ Forum endorsed Magoha, citing his experience in combating exam fraud. However, the legislature has historically approved all presidential nominees since 2013, with one exception in 2015 when Dr. Monica Juma's nomination was rejected over perceived insensitivity and lack of accountability.
