Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has initiated legal proceedings against Deputy President William Ruto over unpaid parking fees totaling Sh203 million, according to city records. The debt stems from 113 parking spaces on Harambee Avenue and 10 allocated spaces along Parliament Road, which were reportedly assigned in 2012 but remained unpaid as of 2014.
City Hall documents reveal Ruto’s office owed Sh189.08 million for the Harambee Avenue spaces and Sh14.06 million for the Parliament Road allocation. Tom Tinega, Director of Parking, stated that repeated attempts to collect the fees had failed. "We do not know if it is default because we have been making demand notes to them," Tinega said.
The Nairobi County government warned of legal action against Ruto’s office and other defaulting institutions. This follows a March 2019 report identifying Ruto’s office as the top defaulter among 11 government entities, with the debt dating back to 2014.
