Kirinyaga County is experiencing a critical shortage of condoms as the sixth Devolution Conference approaches its conclusion, according to local reports. The scarcity has drawn attention amid allegations of increased social activity at hotels and venues hosting the event.
County Governor Anne Waiguru's office distributed over 150,000 condoms ahead of the conference, which runs through Friday, to promote safe sex practices. The initiative, however, generated significant online reaction, with critics questioning the necessity of free contraceptive distribution for attendees who receive per diems and allowances.
A Twitter user highlighted the controversy, stating: "150,000 condoms were distributed in Kirinyaga county ahead of the Governors devolution conference. These are planned to be used by delegates in attendance. These are people paid per diems, other allowances etc. But we still need to give out free condoms. Hii country ina shida (This country has a problem)." The comment reflected broader public concerns about resource allocation.
The situation echoes past controversies, including a 2015 scandal involving Kirinyaga's deputy governor linked to a sex-related incident during a similar conference in Kakamega county.
