A Kenyan family has accused self-proclaimed Prophet David Owuor of orchestrating the fraudulent seizure of Ksh1.5 billion in real estate through his Repentance and Holiness Ministry Church, citing 2004-2005 transactions and alleged coercion.
The dispute involves Jayne Muthoni, a former lawyer who reportedly surrendered control of upscale apartments on Rhapta Road and Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi, to the church. The family claims Owuor influenced Muthoni to appoint Lilly Njage, a church associate, as co-director of Shaba Investment Limited—the registered property owner—in what they describe as a scheme to siphon rental income.
Muthoni’s brother, Duncan Njagi, alleged church officials pressured his sister into transferring property management authority, citing a single bank transaction involving over Ksh700 million. He claimed Owuor’s church now operates from Muthoni’s former residence, which once belonged to late Prof. George Saitoti.
The church’s lawyer, Kimani Watenga, denied allegations of deception, stating Muthoni voluntarily appointed Njage to manage her assets after developing ‘memory problems.’ However, Muthoni’s sister, Alice Macharia, disputed this, claiming her sibling was subjected to forced medication that impaired her cognitive function.
Njage, who managed the properties, maintained she never accessed Muthoni’s bank accounts and preserved records showing no property transfers to the church or herself. The case raises questions about Owuor’s financial practices, as his congregation is known for rejecting traditional offerings while he maintains a lavish lifestyle.
