On April 23, 2019, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion allegedly caused the paralysis of Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) training in 11 centres, leading to his deregistration by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The commission has accused Mr Sossion of fueling failure of teachers to attend the CBC training in various counties, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Kajiado, Machakos, Garissa, Siaya, Kisii, Nyamira, Vihiga, and Kwale.
According to a letter sent by the TSC, Mr Sossion's name was removed from the register of teachers on July 29, 2019, following a judgement by the Employment and Labour Relations Court, which found that TSC had the right to kick out Sossion for joining politics.
Justice Nelson Abuodha ruled that TSC had ably demonstrated that Mr Sossion's association and acceptance of nomination as MP on ODM party ticket went against its tenets as an institution in charge of regulation and discipline of those in the teaching service.
However, Mr Sossion dismissed the move as having little consequences, citing Article 34 (A) of the Labour Relations Act, which he claimed protected his rights as a union official.
“The deregistration changes nothing,” said Mr Sossion.
