Kenya's transport ministry has announced plans to acquire 11 diesel multiple unit locomotives for Sh1.5 billion, according to Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett. The new rolling stock will operate for 20-25 years, significantly expanding rail capacity.
Koimett stated the fleet would increase daily passenger transport from 13,000 to 132,000, though no timeline was given for deliveries. Unlike existing SGR trains, diesel multiple units integrate engines within carriages rather than requiring separate locomotives.
The technology allows engines to be positioned above the frame in engine bays or beneath the floor, with control systems configured for dual-end operation or centralized control compartments.
