A 15-year-old Form One student was expelled from Sengani Secondary School in Kangundo, Machakos County, after attending her guardian’s funeral in February 2019.
The student alleged she was permitted to leave school with a leave-out form for the funeral but was later expelled despite her guardian’s death in a road accident. She told a television station she lived with the deceased, who also covered her school fees while her father was absent.
Evans Ombori, the student’s father, stated he visited the school on February 12, 2019, and was allowed to take his daughter for the funeral scheduled for February 15, 2019. School staff did not specify a return date, only noting it would be 'communicated later.'
