Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure James Macharia confirmed that construction of a Sh700 million four-storey market in Ngong will commence this week, designed to house 2,300 traders. The project, jointly funded by the national government and the World Bank, is part of a broader initiative to build three multi-million shilling markets in Kajiado County, with additional sites planned for Ole Kasasi and Kitengela.
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku acknowledged initial resistance from traders over relocation concerns but stated the county had addressed their grievances. Priority allocation of stalls will be given to existing market operators and youth entrepreneurs, according to Lenku. 'We aim to minimize disruption to livelihoods while transforming Ngong town into a commercial hub that attracts Nairobi customers,' he said.
Ngong traders' representative Geoffrey Wamae emphasized the need for the county to honor commitments to existing vendors. 'We agreed to relocate and urge the government to fulfill its obligations,' he stated. Ngong Member of County Assembly Robert Sungura reiterated support for the project, assuring international stakeholders of local backing.
