Researchers have confirmed a second case of long-term HIV remission following a stem cell transplant, with a London-based patient remaining free of detectable virus for 18 months without antiretroviral therapy.
The unnamed male patient, diagnosed with HIV in 2003 and advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012, underwent chemotherapy and received stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that confers natural resistance to the virus. This treatment led to complete remission of both his cancer and HIV.
